Small Group Band Lessons:
Why are they required, and how do they work?
Full band classes are enormous: 50-60 students at a time, and are great for teaching students to function as musicians in a large ensemble. Coaching and evaluating individual students on their playing skills requires smaller groups, so students are also placed in small lesson groups. The lesson groups meet once every 2-3 weeks during the students’ lunch/recess time. A typical lesson hour schedule looks like this:
There are make-up days built into the schedule to accommodate students who miss their scheduled lesson time. Students have stickers on their band folders showing their assigned band lesson days, which are designated with letters that follow a 10 day cycle (A-J). The 10-day lesson cycle is organized on a special band calendar that students can access at any time using the Schoology app on their iPads. You can also see it yourself through the link below:

- Students bring their lunch into the band room
- Students play their instruments in a small group lesson (about 15 minutes)
- Students eat their lunch in the band room
- Students join their classmates outside for recess for the remainder of the hour
